Bringing people together with sports
To promote social engagement, advocate for wildlife conservation and encourage community interaction – particularly among youths in surrounding villages – the Chem Chem Association organises the annual Chem Chem League Cup.
Founded in 2013 after a massive drought, the intention was to occupy young boys with soccer instead of bringing cattle into the concession. The cup started with 6 teams, including one from Chem Chem, and has grown into a popular attraction, bringing together over 1000 spectators from the Burunge Wildlife Management Area and across Tanzania. The tournament’s opening and final match days are attended by Regional and District Commissioners who use this opportunity to reiterate the importance of protecting wildlife and the environment. The event also helped kickstart the professional career of Rajabu Athumani, who now plays for the Tanzanian national football team. Women groups have also used this annual event to engage in income generation by selling drinks and cooking meals during the opening and final match days. In 2017, the Chem Chem Association introduced a netball competition for young women to complement the beloved soccer tournament.
